This is the level we've descended to: someone on a radio insider message board describing John Sterling as "extraordinaire". Just because the guy ingratiated himself with King George way back when and has managed to hold onto his job, this somehow qualifies him as out of the ordinary. In my book--and I go back to the days when Sterling did talk radio screaming at callers on the old WMCA--the man is pedestrian at best. He certainly couldn't hold a candle to Frank Messer, to name one fine Yankee voice of past days. And compared to great pros like Bob Murphy, Ned Martin, Ernie Harwell and a few others, Sterling is truly lucky to have such a steady gig.
I supposed he'll be remembered as The Voice of the Steroids Era Yankees. But please keep your perspective.
