It's a necessity in radio. With so much technology out there, providing sports info at your finger tips, it isn't enough to just provide the most accurate playbyplay on radio. You have to give listeners a reason to want to hear the radio feed, as opposed to another option. Only having access to a radio isn't enough of a reason. As annoying as some might find Sterling's homerun and end game calls, our familiarity with them is a testament to how popular he is, not to mention the murchandising of those calls.
