>>But of New York's 42 AM/FM stations and Philadelphia's 39 AM/FM stations, how many of them are major (Philly) and how many of them are suburban? I have always thought since NY is the number martket we would have more stations putting a signal through the NY Meto area, compared to Philadelphia which is ranked eighth.<<

Of the ones I counted in my prior post, all the NY FMs transmit from Manhattan save one - 92.7 on Long Island. I didn't count the ones that didn't because none had signal strong enough to make it into Manhattan.

For Philly, I counted 4 suburban FMs. My personal experience tells me all four make it into Center City Philadelphia very well.

On the AM side, the furthest AM station I counted in NY was WNSW, 13.6 miles from midtown Manhattan. The furthest I counted in Philly was WWJZ 640 (Radio Disney), 24.3 miles from Center City. It's a strong signal, although only during the day time.

Just because a city has more people doesn't mean it should have more radio stations.

And that 110 station number probably includes suburban stations, which admittedly are a major factor for certain listeners in the market, and with which NYC stations have to compete.
