When I first moved from NYC to San Francisco in 1989, there were two full-time FM classical stations here.
KDFC had the better signal as a grandfathered super-power Class B, KKHI was a regular Class B. KDFC was cranking out 82kw, KKHI about 6kw (but from a somewhat better antenna location).
KKHI used a much greater degree of audio processing, and although I don't know their motivation, and it sounded a bit odd at first, over time KKHI became quite listenable, especially in a car rolling down the freeway.
