The processing used during WNYC's "Evening Music" always struck me as a good compromise between dynamic range, loudness, and consistency. WQXR on 96.3 was a bit more laid back than WNYC, especially on voice material, so the announcer wouldn't blow you away at the end of a musical piece. But with the big signal on 96.3 (even better than 93.9's signal) they could afford to have such wide dynamic range. WQXR on 105.9 no longer has that luxury.

Prior to today's update, 105.9 WQXR seemed to be using even less processing than they were on 96.3... quiet passages were VERY, very quiet, to the point that they sounded like dead air unless you turned your volume way up. Now they are a bit too over-processed for my liking, but when listening this afternoon during my drive home it really helped me hear every note of the music above the road noise and background hiss/static on the signal.
