Back in the 1970s, rock-based country-style bands were nowhere to be heard on country radio. Even a metropolitan pop-leaning station like WHN-1050 in NYC had no place for records like "Amie" by Pure Prarie League. This particular record never hit the national top 100 Billboard weekly country charts either. Country-flavored tunes by such non-rock artists as Tom Jones, Englebert Humperdink, and Olivia Newton-John stood a much better chance on country radio in the 70s.
Country radio changed a great deal in the mid 80s, and since then, many of the rock-based country-style pop hits of the 70s have found their way onto country radio as "oldies".
Incidently, back in the 60s and early 70s, the metro-NYC country station WJRZ was very friendly towards rock based country-style music. They regularly played tunes like "One Toke Over the Line" by Brewer & Shipley, or "Teach Your Children" by CSN&Y. Very few other country stations did so; NYC-area listeners were very lucky to have had such a progressive country station in those crazy years in the late 60s and early 70's. Bob H.
