Was it WPOC or WMZQ? I recall both of those stations (especially the former) being very tightly formatted and a song like that would certainly be out of character for either one. I don't think that it's a good move for either of those stations to risk alienating people who seek out the country stations as a specific alternative to pop.
However, if it was on a smaller station like WXCY/WFRE/WGTY/WAYZ, I could see them breaking out of their format a little because A) They're all dominant in their markets, so they can afford to take a few risks, and B) there aren't as many choices in those areas, so they can afford to reach out and play some non-country songs to pick up some listeners who might not listen to "pure" country.
