As is mentioned below, Soupy started out in radio. He wrote an autobiography that is a fast read if you pick it up on Amazon or the library. His real name was Milton Supman (which everybody in NC, where he grew up, pronounced "Soupman", hence the nickname).

Of course for me, as a kid in the 60's, it will always be the WNEW TV show. I still have my Soupy Sales Show baseball cards and magazine. A few years ago a DVD of his B&W shows and a DVD of his shows in color came out (they're still available). The shows were as good as I remembered them (if you're only going to buy one, get the B&W edition).

I also remember him as an actor in a couple of episodes of "Love American Style".

He's one of those guys you never hear bad things about. R.I.P.
