Soupy was primarily known for his work on his kids TV show. But he was a smart guy, hence he was a frequent panelist on game shows. And Soupy had a thousand one-liners in his head.

So on paper, it made sense for WNBC to try him as a midday host during an era where music was gradually disappearing on AM but WNBC wasn't ready to make a complete jump to talk. And for an AM Adult Contemporary station, Soupy had universal name recognition across the intended audience who had grown up watching him on TV. In Dallas a former kids TV host, Ron Chapman, had become one of the top radio morning men. But I think he had done radio before his TV days.

I guess the truth is doing a compelling radio show takes a set of skills that have to be learned. It's easier for a radio person to make the transition to TV than the other way around. I suppose Soupy is one example.
