I thought Jack was fine on WNNNNNNBC's sports show. He made his lack of intense sports knowledge a self deprictaing joke, he was kind to his callers, he was able to laugh at himelf, and the pranks Howard pulled on him. He was perfect for the station at the time. Much like Soupy, to steal a pro wrestling term, he was there to be an "enhancement talent", not the star. They were both there to make Howard and Imus look great, be the butt of their jokes, etc., not to overshadw them.
Art, OTOH was far too defensive about his lack of Sports knowledge, going in the opposite direction, trying to say he knew everything about everything, saw everythng, knew everybody. Without Malzberg feeding him info from behind the glass, Art would have struggled mightily doing a Sports show, with how serious he took himself.
