That's what I used to think. But you'd be surprised at how knowledgeable even casual listeners are, and how much attention they pay. I once got some first hand evidence of that.
I got the shock of my life when I sat behind the glass out of the group's view and listened in on some focus groups of ordinary, non-professional listeners. Fortunately I didn't hear myself being trashed by people who didn't know I was listening in (the feedback about my own work turned out to be positive--I don't know how I'd have felt if it had been otherwise). But I did hear a lot of unexpected things about how people react to the shows and personalities they hear on a regular basis.
They notice more, and pay more attention, than we give them credit for. Believe me, when we do a good job it's noticed, when we do a sloppy job it's noticed, and when we do something that offends people, you better believe it's noticed.
