"NO AVERAGE LISTENER EVEN KNOWS IT'S SCOTT SHANNON"

I know we're often guilty of giving too much credit to listeners on a board full of radio pros and enthusiasts, but perhaps we're givng *too little* credit here. Shannon led the #1 morning show in New York through much of the 1980s, not to mention a syndicated countdown show, and has since been identified with WPLJ since the early 1990s. And he's not just a liner card reader, but an actual personality with, as others have posited, a very *distinct* voice.

I'm not passing judgment on Shannon one way or the other (hey, money talks), but to say that his voice is not easily identifiable to average listeners may be a stretch.

When watching television ads with friends or family, is it not commonplace for someone to say (or think) "hey, isn't that xxxxx" during the voiceover?

Listeners are not in complete coma. If we can absorb gobs of pop culture trivia, we can recognize marquis voice talent.
