Actually, he's referring to receiver overload and the image created by an overloaded front end on the radio.
My car radio will reilably detect and decode an AM carrier on a second harmonic if within a 200 milliVolt or greater field. I have measured both the WOR and WABC signals at the Lowe's on Route 17 in Rutherford (I think that's Rutherford) - both have almost 400 mV of signal in this location. My radio produces WOR on 1420 and WABC on 1540. I can't measure the 2nd harmonic of either station in this parking lot - it's well below -80 dBc on both stations.
