Allan sent me a note while I was away this past week to tell me Billy Epperhart had passed away. Pancreatic cancer killed him. Damn.
Billy was in my top ten list of all time favorite engineers (board ops) of ANY station EVER.
At MusicRadio 77WABC Billy was one of the nicest, most enthusiastic people I ever worked with. He looked liker a younger, blond Rich Little. Always had a smile. Always on top of things. Smiling. A pleasure to be around.
Even to the point of taking him with me one afternoon when I had to fly to South Jersey. I recall making one of the all-time UGLIEST landings of my LIFE. (The sun visors actually fell out of their mounts. That's a HARD landing.) Billy, knowing full well that I had just embarassed myself bigtime, grinned and said: "Well, here we ARE."
I looked into my email directory and his address is there. I know this sounds fatalistic but, I wish I had conversed with him more. I wish. God! what a wonderful man.
